If you have further questions about HVO fuel, you can call our fuel experts on 01282 775431 to find out more about switching to HVO fuel.
HVO is a fossil-free renewable diesel fuel that can be used as a drop-in alternative to red and white diesel while reducing up to 90% of net CO2 emissions.
It is accepted by the Road Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), certified by the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) and meets the international fuel standards EN15930 & ASTOM D975. With a large number of OEM approvals, it can be used in many applications including modern vehicles, construction machinery, trains, inland waterways, industrial power systems and generators.
Key HVO fuel benefits
✔ Fully interchangeable with fossil diesel and compatible with existing fuelling infrastructure
✔ Reduced need for regular testing and ten times longer shelf life than fossil diesel
✔ Up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions, up to 27% reduction in NOx emissions and 84% reduction in PM
✔ Reduced particulate production during combustion reduces the ageing of engine oils
✔ Meets EN 15940:2016 specifications and is endorsed by a wide range of manufacturers

HVO fuel FAQs
What is HVO?
HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and is a form of renewable diesel that’s been produced from certified vegetable fats and oils using a hydrotreatment process.
HVO is FAME and fossil-free and is part of the paraffinic family of fuels, which are defined by high quality clean liquid fuels with zero sulphur and aromatic content.
How is HVO made?
Hydrotreating vegetable oils is a fairly recent technique to produce high quality diesel products from fully renewable materials which can be regrown when stock is needed. These crops avoid damage to the environment and local ecosystems, and don’t contribute to global deforestation.
Hydrogen is used as a catalyst instead of methanol which is used for regular biodiesel. Impurities are removed from the product through a hydrogenation and isomerisation process. This results in a stable and quality paraffinic fuel that operates in exactly the same way as fossil diesel but with substantially less risk of degradation when in storage.
What is HVO fuel made from?
HVO is produced from renewable and sustainable raw materials which do not add any new CO2 into the atmosphere upon combustion. All raw materials are checked and verified and HVO’s credentials audited by the Department for Transport (DFT) which confirms that HVO is a fully sustainable product with all ingredients certified.
What is the difference between diesel and HVO fuel?
Due to environmental laws, it is mandatory for mineral diesel to contain FAME (fatty acid methyl esters) which have varying degrees of unsaturation and are susceptible to oxidation. FAME is hygroscopic, which means that it attracts atmospheric moisture which increases the likelihood of microbial attack (diesel bug) and requires diesel and gas oil to be regularly monitored.
HVO’s production process removes unsaturation and contaminants and leaves a pure hydrocarbon fuel which is a stable product that can last up to 10 years, providing good storage conditions and less need for regular testing.
Who can use HVO fuel?
HVO has a paraffinic petrochemical structure and is therefore almost identical to fossil diesel, allowing it to be used and handled as a drop-in alternative without infrastructure adjustments.
HVO has a large number of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) approvals:
|Heavy duty road vehicles||Passenger cars||Non-road use|
Why use HVO fuel?
Time is running out to put effective measures in place to help the UK achieve its net zero carbon targets. Legally binding environmental targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions mean that businesses must seek alternative solutions to generate power or face the consequences. However, those currently being explored in the government’s roadmap require huge costs to implement new infrastructure and will take years to come into effect.
HVO fuel offers a fast and simple stepping stone towards net zero with no CAPEX requirement.
