What are Road Diesel, White Diesel, DERV, Gas Oil and Red Diesel?
Despite the many names for road diesel, white diesel, DERV, gas oil and red diesel, they’re all the exact same fuel – at least from a chemical perspective.
The difference between them is in how fuel duty is applied and collected by HMRC at the point of sale. This rate of duty directly affects where the fuels can be used and by whom – only a select few industries are able to use red diesel, for example.

Road Diesel, White Diesel and DERV
These are the most common names used to describe the fuel you buy from the pump at petrol filling stations. This is the fuel which receives the higher fuel duty (tax) rate which allows you to use it on public roads.
You could also use it within other vehicles designated as off-road and in industrial vehicles, as well as backup generators for example. However, due to the additional taxes on this fuel, it would be costlier to do so.

Red Diesel and Gas Oil
Gas oil, or red diesel, is the low fuel duty (tax) rated fuel whose use is limited by HMRC to a select few industries and use cases:
- Powering machinery in travelling fairs and circuses
- Electricity and heat generation in non-commercial purposes – e.g. domestic homes, hospitals and state schools
- Agriculture, horticulture, fish farming and forestry
- Rail transport (in vehicles designed to be used on rails)
- Community amateur sport clubs and golf courses
- Sailing, boating and marine transport (excluding private pleasure craft in Northern Ireland)
Due to its common use within the agricultural community, it can also sometimes be known as agricultural diesel and tractor diesel to name but a few.
It is known as red diesel due to the red dye that is used to mark its low duty status, and also allows HMRC enforcement officers to effectively track its use.
